   prelate
   Born to a Jewish family in Paris, Jean-Marie Lustiger converted to Catholicism in 1940. Archbishop of Paris (1981), then cardinal (1983), he has always sought to be the representative of a church open to the intellectual debates of the modern era, while still firmly upholding Catholic ethical and moral positions. Cardinal Lustiger, the author of Le Choix de Dieu (1987), was elected to the académie FRANÇAISE in 1995.
